Dr. Gelenberg: Smoking is an important concern for psychiatrists andtheir patients. Data show that about ¹ person in 5 in the general populationsmokes or uses tobacco products1 and that smoking is the leading cause ofpreventable death in the United States.² Patients with mental illness have ahigher rate of smoking than the base population³ and smoke twice as manycigarettes as smokers without mental illness.⁴
