Dr. Gelenberg: Smoking is an important concern for psychiatrists andtheir patients. Data show that about 1 person in 5 in the general populationsmokes or uses tobacco products1 and that smoking is the leading cause ofpreventable death in the United States.2 Patients with mental illness have ahigher rate of smoking than the base population3 and smoke twice as manycigarettes as smokers without mental illness.4
